Modern Magick by Donald Michael Kraig (Llewellyn)
The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP) is a ritual practised by members of the Golden Dawn. It was outlined in a book I recently bought called Modern Magick: Eleven Lessons in the High Magickal Arts by Donald Michael Kraig. However, Asiya from Asiya’s Shadows has adapted it from the book and is available for viewing here. Asiya also teaches you how to pronounce the Hebrew in her podcast episode.
This ritual is supposed to be best performed every day and once memorised, becomes quite a brief and simple ritual to do. Ceremonial magic is usually more elaborate than Wiccan rituals so I found this ritual, which is supposed to be one of the most basic and short out there, quite a lot to remember. However, the years of magical practice may be to thank for how easily and readily I was able to visualise the images, as well as ‘”vibrating” the Hebrew words, which is a lot more easily to achieve than I had anticipated.

So my first experience with the LBRP was quite successful. I had to remind myself of the words and thus clutched a book in my left hand throughout the entire ritual, but it went quite smoothly and I did feel a mild sense of cleansing when it was complete. I suspect the results would be more powerful once I learn this ritual by heart.

I performed my third consecutive Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram last night. It was also the first time that I did it empty-handed as the previous nights I held my copy of Donald Michael Kraig’s Modern Magick in one hand to refer to the Hebrew words. Unfortunately, in my determination, I jumped straight past the part where I visualise the archangels and decided to repeat that section at the end. Very unorthodox. But not clutching a book in one hand really helped me focus on the visualisations and they are getting easier and more vivid each time I attempt this ritual. I can’t really say if things on the physical plane have been changed, but there have been various improvements in both myself and my life, which may or may not be attributed to the ritual.

Without fail, I have been performing the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram every night, at least. On New Year’s Day, I performed one in the morning as well, which was a new experience for me, doing all my visualisations in the brightness of the day. I have all the memorisation down perfectly, the only mistake I have a habit of making is when I acknowledge the Archangels, I have a tendency to say, “Behind me, Uriel” instead of, “Behind me, Gabriel”. It just feels more natural to refer to Uriel instead of Gabriel for some odd reason. I have made that mistake more often than once, and I need to consciously remind myself to follow with “Gabriel” every time. Another thing I like to do is to have music when I do the ritual. I tried various songs but the one that works the best for me is a slow and sensuous song by Natacha Atlas, which is in Arabic, so it doesn’t distract me through its lyrics.
In a few weeks time, I intend to move on to the Banishing Ritual of the Hexagram, and once I feel confident in that, to the Supreme Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram.
